Scar Treatment Q & A

What causes scars?

Scars are related to skin trauma that may come from injury, acne outbreaks, chickenpox, and even previous surgery. The scars are due to your body’s natural attempt to heal itself by producing collagen and other substances to repair the damage.

Pitted or sunken scars occur when not enough collagen is produced. Raised scars (keloids) are related to an overabundance of collagen and may become larger than the original wound. Improper wound closure and care following an injury or surgery can also lead to scarring.

What is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation?

While not a true scar, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation occurs when an injury or inflammation from acne, eczema, or psoriasis causes skin discoloration due to increased pigment production. Hyperpigmentation may appear as pink, red, or purple discoloration on light skin tones.

Deeper skin tones often exhibit dark brown or black areas of discoloration. Hyperpigmentation may eventually fade without treatment, but that can take years.

What is the treatment for scars?

The most effective way to reduce scarring is to prevent it from occurring with early treatment for conditions such as acne or eczema by a skin care specialist like Dr. Ding. Her surgical skills also reduce the risk of visible scarring following mole removal and other skin surgeries.

If you already have scarring, Dr. Ding offers many effective treatments that can greatly reduce and even eliminate the appearance of scars. She creates a strategy that’s tailored to your needs and is based upon the type(s) of scarring you’ve developed.

Your treatment may include:

  • Laser skin resurfacing (fractionated laser/Fraxel)
  • Chemical peels
  • Microdermabrasion

Microneedling is a form of collagen-induction therapy that encourages your body to heal your scars naturally. During the treatment, Dr. Ding moves a sterile, handheld, needle-studded roller across depressed scars. This creates shallow puncture wounds in your skin that signal your body to create more collagen. It may sound painful, but the needles are very small, and the treatment is quick, which greatly reduces any discomfort you might experience.

Raised scars often respond to injections containing medication that softens fibrous collagen tissue and flattens the scar. Laser therapy and even in-office scar revision surgery are also very effective treatments for stubborn scars.
